The volume of active Nigerian country code top-level domain (ccTLD), – .ng domains – has seen massive growth following increased adoption over the past year, according to the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA).
Nairametrics, citing a recent NiRA report, revealed that the volume of active .ng domains now stands at around 241,000. This growth follows the addition of 98,285 new registrations, 71,470 renewals, and 1,970 restorations in the past year.
Interestingly, the growth comes amid the group’s effort to promote .ng and .gov.ng domains among Nigerian institutions.
NiRA President Adesola Akinsanya disclosed that the growth was accompanied by notable security upgrades to improve safety and resilience. The improvements included Domain Name System Security Extensions alongside registrar support and engagement aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s internet infrastructure.
Akinsanya furthered that the association is targeting start-ups and focusing on tech events across Nigeria to increase adoption.
Additionally, NiRA intends to launch awareness campaigns and digital capacity-building initiatives to encourage adoption by governments, across all levels. According to him, both areas show considerable level of possibilities that can help drive adoption.
“We are specifically targeting startups and aligning with tech events across the country and with stronger collaboration, we can drive widespread adoption across every tier of government,” Akinsanya stated.
.ng domains marks major trend reversal
The .ng domains’ growth marks a major trend reversal from their low adoption rate from a few years ago.
In May 2022, the Nigerian domains dropped to 179,420 from 181,176 a year before, highlighting reduced interest among institutions. Before this, NiRA had launched a series of campaigns including an ambitious target of increasing the volume of active Nigerian domains.
Nevertheless, NiRA has continued to promote local domain usage with government institutions now embracing Nigeria’s digital identity.
