The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a new loan scheme for Nigerians to purchase laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other devices through flexible payment plans.
The scheme, known as the Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices (C.L.I.C.K.D) was unveiled on July 21. It resulted from a partnership between the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
Per the announcement, the programme seeks to simplify Nigerians’ access to digital tools needed to learn, work, and earn. Officials stated that the initiative will enhance digital inclusion by removing financial barriers usually hindering Nigerians from owning essential technological devices.
The scheme’s pilot phase includes delivering 1,000 laptops to participants of the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme.
CREDICORP’s CEO Uzoma Nwagba highlighted that the program would begin with locally assembled laptops, amid efforts to promote domestic production.
According to him, 77 3MTT fellows have already received devices while distribution to successful applicants in other states will continue in phases.
How to apply for the Gadget Loan Scheme – C.L.I.C.K.D.
Notably, interested applicants are expected to visit the official C.L.I.C.K.D portal to register their interest. This involves providing details like state of residence, employment status, income range, preferred device, and purpose of needing the gadget.
Applicants can describe themselves as salary earners, freelancers, entrepreneurs, students, job seekers or even National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. They would also indicate their association with any of the recognized digital talent programs. These include the 3MTT, Andela Learning Community, Learn2Earn, ALX Africa, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa, and Genesys Tech Hub.
While the program covers several tech communities, the pilot phase only caters for 3MTT fellows, acccording to CREDICORP.
However, details of the loan’s interest rate, repayment period and initial payment requirements are currently unknown.
Interestingly, this represents the latest Government-involved effort to improve tech access among Nigerians.
